Analysis of Allergens: New European Regulation
Agilent: Analysis of Allergens: New European Regulation
Fragrance allergens are molecules often present in cosmetic products that can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. These are not intentionally added ingredients by cosmetics manufacturers, but rather substances naturally occurring in the components that make up the fragrance.
In 2012, the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) identified 82 fragrance substances that can cause allergies in humans. On July 26, 2023, the European Commission published Regulation 2023/1545, amending Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council. This regulation pertains to the labeling of allergenic substances in cosmetic products. The historical list of 26 allergens has now been expanded to 82 compounds. Synthetic fragrances and essential oils contain allergens classified as “risky” ingredients.
