Significance of the Topic


Adderall is a prescription medication for ADHD that can enhance focus and alertness, but counterfeit versions containing methamphetamine pose serious public health risks. Rapid, on-site detection of these fakes is therefore critical for law enforcement and healthcare providers.

Objectives and Study Overview


This case study investigates the performance of a 1064 nm handheld Raman spectrometer (TacticID Mobile) compared to a conventional 785 nm system in identifying a suspected counterfeit Adderall tablet.

Methodology


Non-destructive Raman spectra were collected directly through the intact pill using a point-and-shoot adapter on both handheld devices. Results were matched against embedded spectral libraries.

Results and Discussion


The 785 nm device yielded spectra dominated by fluorescence, preventing library identification. In contrast, the TacticID Mobile successfully detected a mixture of cellulose and caffeine in the suspect pill. Comparative spectra with a genuine Adderall sample showed characteristic lactose peaks in the authentic tablet.
