SelectScience: An alternative approach using GC-Orbitrap MS for the analysis of pesticide residues in food

In a high-throughput environment, robust analytical workflows are key requirements for the accurate and reliable determination of trace-level pesticide residues in food samples. These methods must overcome the challenges of an ever-growing list of compounds and the diversity of sample matrices, in addition to demanding sensitivity and identification requirements. Typically, gas chromatography coupled to low-resolution, nominal mass triple quadrupole mass spectrometers (GC-MS/MS) has been the technology of choice for the sensitive and selective detection of a wide range of target compounds. High-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) using GC Orbitrap™ MS provides distinct advantages to overcome these challenges and offers a more efficient and flexible approach.

In this webinar, Professor Pascal Cardinael, University of Rouen Normandy, and Dominic Roberts, Thermo Fisher Scientific, share results that look at the merits of both GC-MS/MS and HRAM for the analysis of pesticide residues in food samples.

Key learning objectives
  • Assess alternative systems for the analysis of pesticide residues in food
  • Learn how HRAM MS can improve efficiency and flexibility
  • Learn how the current technology can be used to determine pesticide residues in food samples
Who should attend?
  • Scientists working for contract testing organizations, regulators, and academics
  • Laboratory managers
  • Gas and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry users

Presenter: Professor Pascal Cardinael (Professor, University of Rouen Normandy)

Pascal Cardinael obtained his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry in 2000 from the University of Rouen (France) under the supervision of Prof. JC Combret and Dr. Y Combret. In 2001, Prof. Cardinael became a lecturer at the University of Rouen Normandy and the professor of analytical chemistry in 2011. He has managed the chromatography team of the UR3233 SMS laboratory since 2011. This team focuses on the development of new stationary phases and miniaturized columns for gas chromatography. All practical and fundamental aspects of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) are also studied including modulator technology, retention modeling, and coupling with high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Presenter: Dominic Roberts (Product Marketing Manager GC Orbitrap MS, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Dominic Roberts has been closely involved with the Thermo Scientific™ GC Orbitrap™ MS since its launch in 2015. He started at Thermo Fisher Scientific as a Senior Applications Specialist for the product and is currently the GC Orbitrap MS Marketing Manager. He is an experienced analytical chemist and mass spectrometrist with more than 20 years of experience using state-of-the-art analytical systems. He has worked in both a regulatory and industrial environment with GC–MS and LC-MS systems to investigate a variety of chemicals in food, biological, and environmental samples.

Presenter: Blake Forman (SelectScience)

Blake studied chemistry at the University of Surrey, UK, and further went on to study a master’s in chemistry at the University of Southampton, UK. Blake has previously worked in the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) lab at LGC and as a technical sales specialist for Waters. As a member of the Editorial team, he now plays an integral role in shaping the content on SelectScience.
