Thermo Fisher Scientific: Enhancing Breath Biopsy Through TD-GC-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry
Thermo Fisher Scientific: Enhancing Breath Biopsy Through TD-GC-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry

The Breath Biopsy® (Owlstone Medical) platform offers non-invasive collection and analysis of compounds on breath. Integrating TD-GC-Orbitrap has enhanced the capabilities of Breath Biopsy for application in targeted and untargeted biomarker research.

What you will learn:

  • Introduction of non-invasive Breath Biopsy combined with Thermo Scientific Orbitrap technology and the use of high-resolution accurate mass spectrometry (HRAM) as an analytical solution for early disease detection and precision medicine
  • The importance of rigorous quality control at every stage to ensure robust breath sample analysis
  • Demonstration of the software tools and data workflows used to identify and investigate breath biomarkers

This presentation will describe how integrating Orbitrap mass spectrometers into the Breath Biopsy platform has allowed us to address some of the widely accepted challenges associated with breath analysis. Breath Biopsy is a broad ranging tool that can be applied to identify and investigate biomarkers with relevance to early detection and precision medicine across a wide range of diseases including asthma, liver disease and cancers.

Breath samples can contain over 1000 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their abundance can span more than 5 orders of magnitude. Orbitrap technology allows detection of both high-abundance VOCs and trace-level analytes within a single analysis. Combined with an sample processing method that is optimized for breath samples, and a thorough quality control protocol, this ensures that Breath Biopsy is the world-leader in breath biomarker analysis.

Using the Thermo Scientific Compound Discoverer software package, customized feature extraction and data processing methodologies have been developed, streamlining the identification of unknowns for discovery metabolomics. We will also discuss how the implementation of Thermo Scientific Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS) software has provided enhancements in data acquisition, management and processing, providing the end-to-end solution required to manage the logistics of ever-increasing demand on our high-throughput Breath Biopsy Laboratory.

Who should attend:

  • Scientists looking to understand the advantages of Orbitrap technology in addressing the challenges of breath analysis
  • Those interested in the optimization of methods and processes for high-throughput analysis of breath samples
  • Specialists wanting to better understand the underlying technologies behind use of Breath Biopsy in clinical trials
  • Analysers wishing to know more about feature deconvolution and data analysis pipelines for breath analysis
