Presentation 1: Considerations for the Fast Analysis of Smoke Impacted Wines by SPME GC/MS

With the increase in wildfires over various regions around the globe, many growers and wineries continue to worry about smoke impact in grapes and their wine. Agilent has developed a solid phase microextraction (SPME) gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method to analyze the free-form volatile phenols associated with smoke impact. With the increase in sample volume and the need to make timely decisions regarding the harvest, laboratories are seeking shorter extraction times and faster GC methods. Techniques such as utilizing salt to increase the volatile compounds partitioning into the headspace, a High Efficiency GC column, and/or a more selective mass spec detector can increase laboratory throughput. This presentation will deliver tips and tricks on increasing sample throughput and maintaining data integrity for smoke impacted wine analysis.

Key Learning Objectives/What attendees will learn:

  • Strategies for analyzing aromatic compounds in wine by SPME
  • Strategies to speed up your GCMS method

Who Should Attend: Laboratory technicians, researchers, and scientists wishing to learn more about SPME-GC(MS) analysis of wine.

Presenter: Vanessa Abercrombie (Gas Chromatography Applications Chemist, Agilent)

Vanessa Abercrombie is a GC Applications Chemist at Agilent Technologies in Folsom, CA. Vanessa has a broad background in GC and GC/MS, including experience as an instrument chemist at Bode Technology in Virginia working under contract to the FBI’s Laboratory Division. Prior to that, Vanessa worked for ETS Labs in St. Helena, CA as an Analytical Chemist where she researched and developed quantitative separations by GC/MS and UHPLC for beer, wine and spirits.

Presenter: Jessica Westland (Sample Preparation Application Scientist, Agilent)

Jessica Westland is a sample prep application scientist with over 10 years of analytical laboratory experience and a background in method development for GC & GC/MS applications. She works closely with cross-functional teams to support Agilent’s sample preparation products portfolio. Jessica focuses on producing technical data and field support material for all sample prep products which include SPME products and consumables.

Presentation 2: Multi Elemental Wine Analysis by MP-AES: Development, Validation and Application

Finding the right technique for wine analysis can be a difficult decision. This webinar will demonstrate the capabilities of Agilent’s MP-AES 4210 for the fast analysis of wine. Our expert speaker will talk attendees through the development of a new MP-AES method and what applications it can be used for. The efficiency and effectiveness of this method will also be highlighted using an accuracy profile approach. Attendees will also be taken through a case study, able to view occurrence data for white and rosé wines.

Key Learning Objectives/What attendees will learn:

  • Find out about elemental analysis of wines and why it’s important
  • Learn how the MP-AES method works
  • Understand the benefits of this technique through an insightful case study

Who Should Attend: People in the wine industry interested in learning about how element composition can impact their wine quality.

Presenter: Fanny Hernandez (Head of the Elemental Analysis Unit, Laboratoires Dubernet)

After a PhD thesis on Chromium Speciation in food at the ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety) Fanny is responsible for the elementary unit analysis at Laboratoires Dubernet since 2017. Her main missions are to develop new analytical tools in order to better understand balances of wines from an agro-oenological approach.
