Hydrocarbons, originating from various sources such as industrial discharges, urban runoff, or natural processes, can adversely impact aquatic ecosystems. Understanding the Hydrocarbon Index is essential for safeguarding water resources, protecting ecosystems, and promoting public health and environmental sustainability.

Public environmental service providers and contract testing laboratories could greatly increase sample throughput of water samples for the analysis of total hydrocarbon index according to the method EN ISO 9377-2, thanks to an automated workflow for liquid-liquid extraction, clean-up and on-line large volume injection into the GC, through the robotic Thermo Scientific TriPlus RSH SMART Autosampler. The system is fully controlled by Thermo Scientific Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS) Software. Thanks to the Intelligent Sequence and the eWorkflow functionalities, it offers a complete automated management of the samples, automated reporting and transfer to LIMS, enabling 24/7 operations with significant labor and cost saving.

Dr. Daniela Cavagnino received her Masters Degree in Chemistry at the University of Milan, Italy. She started her career in gas chromatography at Thermo Fisher Scientific spending several years in the R&D laboratories working on GC technology innovation. Then, she conveyed her technical background into product management and marketing management roles with more than 15 years experience in promoting GC/GCMS technology and applications in several different market segments.
