Method validation is critical to adoption of an analytical method, but how does one tackle it for direct mass spectrometry (DMS) techniques? In this webinar (the third in a four-part series), we answer this question in the context of selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), the leading automated DMS technique for analysis of volatile compounds.

First, we will make a comparison of method development for SIFT-MS and conventional chromatographic techniques. Then, using a detailed case study on headspace analysis of volatiles in water, we will describe how to develop and validate a SIFT-MS method so that the data can be used to support regulatory requirements. This is achieved by applying a strategic approach in accordance with ICH Q2(R1) Guidelines. Finally, a second brief case study describes analysis of BTEX in soil following methanolic extraction. Note that a third case study – analysis of residual formaldehyde analysis in novel drug delivery devices – will be described in the final webinar in the series. The case studies demonstrate the efficient method development and validation (and high sample throughput) achievable using automated SIFT-MS.

Join us for this webinar to learn more about how SIFT-MS works, how it speeds up analysis, and how it can be validated successfully in accordance with ICH Q2(R1) Guidelines suitable for pharmaceutical applications such as regulatory submissions where GMP compliance is essential.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Very brief review of SIFT-MS and its automation
  • Method development: similarities and differences between SIFT-MS and conventional chromatographic techniques
  • How to apply the ICH method validation parameters to SIFT-MS
  • Two case studies of method development and validation with SIFT-MS: soil analysis and water analysis

Who should attend:

  • Laboratory managers and analysts in routine industrial and contract testing and research laboratories, particularly those working with the analysis of volatiles
  • Laboratory managers and analysts in pharmaceutical, biomedical, industrial, consumer product, and environmental laboratories

Presenter: Mark Perkins, Ph.D. (Senior Applications Chemist, Anatune Limited, United Kingdom)

Mark is a senior applications chemist at Anatune Limited and a global authority in automated SIFT-MS. Mark has extensive experience in both conventional chromatographic methods as well as SIFT-MS. Prior to joining Anatune, he spent 12 years as a senior analyst and chromatography section manager at the Malaysian Rubber Board’s UK research center.

Presenter: Vaughan Langford, Ph.D. (Principal Scientist, Syft Technologies, New Zealand)

Vaughan joined Syft in 2002 after completing his PhD in Physical Chemistry at the University of Canterbury, and post-doctoral fellowships at the Universities of Geneva, Western Australia, and Canterbury. With an extensive background in diverse applications of SIFT-MS, he provides advanced applications training and support to SIFT-MS users globally.

Moderator: Cameron Smith (Editorial Team, SelectScience)

Cameron studied Biomedical Science at the University of the West of England, UK, specializing in medical microbiology and oncology during his final year. As a member of the Editorial team, he now plays an integral role in shaping the content on SelectScience.
